国名，即国家的名称（包含主权国家和地区的名称）。通常国名是指国家的官方外交名而非简称。

一个国家采取何种政体，与社会各阶层在国家政治经济中的地位有关，也同时受到社会所处的自然环境，历史传统，民族构成的制约。同样是封建制的国家，其政体可能是君主制，也可能是共和制。而不同性质的国家也可能采用相通的政体，例如古希腊是共和制，现代很多资本主义国家也是共和制。而古今的同名政体的具体含义也可能有所不同。
现代国家的政体主要包括君主制和共和制。君主制又可以分为二元君主制和议会君主制；共和制包括总统制、议会制、委员会制和半总统制。以下只是人们通常对政治体制的一些分别：
1、传统（部落或家族） 或现代（官僚政治）
2、单一民族性的（朝鲜） 或多民族性的（德国）

古代国家名称
1.共和国：古代的不完全民主制国家，或公共事务由公民共同处理的国家，如罗马共和国。2.
帝国：指以皇帝或国王为国家首领且独掌国家大权，国家首领的继承为世袭制的国家，也可称为王国，如法兰克王国，罗马帝国。
当代世界国家名称
1、共和国：指国家代表机关和国家元首由选举产生。现今世界上有125个共和国，像法兰西共和国、芬兰共和国等。
2、王国：指以国王为国家元首的君主立宪制国家。现今全球共有16个王国。
3、公国：是君主立宪制的一种形式。如安道尔公国等。
4、大公国：君主称号为“大公”，由大公掌握国家权力的国家，如卢森堡大公国等。
5、联邦：由若干成员组成的统一国家，如瑞士联邦等。有的国家称之为“联盟”，如科摩罗联盟。
6、合众国：是联邦制的一种形式。像美利坚合众国、墨西哥合众国等。
7、酋长国：以部落酋长为国家元首的国家。像阿拉伯联合酋长国等。
8、城国：以教皇为国家元首的国家。如梵蒂冈，世界上也只有这么一个国家。
9、苏丹国：一切执行权归苏丹的国家。如阿曼苏丹国等。
10、人民共和国：是社会主义国家。如中国、朝鲜、老挝。
注：古今的国名含义有发生变化，具体以国名所指国家的存在时间区分。
中国古代所有朝代,都不以中国为国名,又都以中国为通称。至晚明、清初时期,西方传教士东来,他们均称明清两朝为“中华帝国”,简称,即是“中国”。利玛窦在《利玛窦中国札记》记载:“这个国家有一个各个时代一直沿用的称号,他们的人民通常称呼这个国家为中国(Ciumquo)或中华(Ciumhoa),意思是为‘位于中央之国’。”
截止2019年，世界上共有195个主权国家（193个联合国会员国，2个联合国观察员国（巴勒斯坦，梵蒂冈），2个准主权国家（库克群岛，纽埃），科索沃尚未得到多数国家的承认，也未加入联合国，因此不计。）。
